Wednesday 10th March

Well, we’ve had another amazing day! We started off by visiting the Buller Gorge, which has a very long swing (rope) bridge across which we, the intrepid travellers, had no problem crossing (?#!). The area was the epicentre of the 1929 earthquake and we were able to walk along the visible fault line and also observe where prospectors panned for gold in the river. The drive down the Buller Gorge was again very impressive with one part covered with a rock overhang only wide enough for one lane of traffic. We then continued on to Karamea which is about as far north as you can go by car on the west coast. Here, by chance we were exploring the beach, which had miles of deserted golden sand; we came across a 9-hole links golf course. ‘Raoul’ was on the first tee hitting numerous balls, and having let us have a drive using his clubs, he asked us if we wanted to borrow his clubs and play a few holes. We were the only players on the course and just had time to play 4 holes and put $10 in the honesty box; we returned Raoul’s clubs to the Resort where we are staying so that he could retrieve them - would you let 2 complete strangers borrow your clubs?
