Thursday 4th March

Today has been a long drive from Napier to Wellington. We had coffee this morning in quite an interesting art deco building which had been the former village library. We then drove through not so interesting scenery until we passed through the gorge between the Ruahine and the Tararua Ranges which was very scenic. We then reached the Tasman Sea coast at Otaki, which could not be compared with the northern beaches which we saw earlier. However, a drive up the Otaki Gorge to where some of the Lord of the Rings had been filmed proved to be the highlight of the day. The hills covered with thick forests had been used as the woods outside Hobbiton and were only reached on a narrow, twisty and mountainous but passable unmade ‘road/track’. Tonight’s accommodation has proved pretty basic; tomorrow we will have a brief foray into Wellington before crossing on the ferry to South Island.
