Friday 5th March

We spent a couple of hours this morning in the museum in Wellington. It proved to be an eye catching, inspiring museum, with lots of information about the geological formation of New Zealand and the Maori treaty effectively giving New Zealand to Britain. It also involved 2 rides – one to show today’s various cultural activities and one in a ‘submarine’ to where volcanoes are erupting deep in the Pacific Ocean.
At lunchtime we boarded the interisland ferry for a 3½ hour journey to South Island. The ferry ride takes one hour to clear the North Island coast, one hour to cross the Cook Straits and one hour through the Queen Charlotte Sound into Picton. This latter element was very picturesque and Liz saw some dolphins but didn’t manage to catch them with the camera. We are staying in a very plush motel, which is full of interesting vehicles which are taking part in a charity run from Christchurch to Auckland. They were all very noisy when we arrived, but quietened down when it started to rain. We had a very good meal overlooking the harbour and Liz managed to get some groper fish cooked in Malibu this evening.
