We had another day of site seeing under beautiful blue skies! We started the day by visiting the Kahurangi Estate vineyard, which is part of the 3D set up we are members of with our French vineyards. We had a tasting and personal tour and it was interesting to compare their wine making techniques with the French vineyards we have visited. The grapes are due to be picked in the next fortnight. We bought enough bottles of their merlot to keep us going until we leave NZ!
We then drove north through rugged scenery towards Farewell Spit, which is the longest sand spit in NZ – about 27kms long. This is another interesting feature of mainly sand dunes. Only accompanied tours are actually allowed on the spit, but we climbed to a vantage point and managed to get a full view of the length of it. On the way to Farewell Spit we stopped off to look at the Pupu Springs, which come from underground and form a lake. It is possible to see the bubbles on the surface of the lake where the crystal clear water is welling up from the springs at a very high rate.
We are staying in a quaint but comfortable cabin on the coast and off the beaten track. If you ignore the spiders and beetles it is in a lovely setting with views from the balcony of the Tasman Sea.
Tomorrow we are travelling towards the west coast so have another journey through the mountains.
